Blog Post 2 - Mexico

In today’s blog we will be looking at Mexico’s agenda and how they are addressing Sustainable Development Goal, good health and well-being. Like many other countries within the United Nations they have an agenda that would like to implement by 2030. They have 169 targets they would like to address that involve all of the sustainable development goals. At the end of 2015 they started implementing techniques from the agenda. The president has already gotten in contact with many local governments to talk about different ways to implement SDG’s in their programs. Things that need to be done going forward is prioritizing, coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating different methods to make sure that the SDG’s are being fulfilled. (Implementing the 2030 Agenda in Mexico. 2018) Some of the ways they have implemented methods to achieve the third goal is by improving neonatal care and facilitating access. With this they plan to reduce mortality rates in newborns. They would like to provide mother and babies with “positive airway pressure therapy, surfactants for respiratory distress syndrome, oxygen therapy, breastfeeding, and skin-to-skin care.” ( González-Pier, E,. Barraza-Lloréns, M., Beyeler, N., Jamison, D., Knaul, F., Lozano, R., Sepúlveda, J. 2016, August 30 )

To look after the rest of the population, they want to implement new policies as well as build on existing ones. For example, they want to raise taxes on certain items, such as tobacco, sweet beverages, and high calorie processed food. By rising taxes on these items, they want to push their community to make better life choices. In order to monitor this SDG and make sure that it is working, they have come up with a system called Performance Evaluation System (PES). Through this program, they want to make sure that the indicators that they want to reach are achieved. It has not been specified how much Mexico intends to spend, but it is estimated that they will need the government funding of 5%. Another obstacle they might run into is climate change. In order for the community to have good health they need to start looking after the environment they live in. Different areas can affect the way they live their life and climate change can easily influence that. This is an issue for the country because they need to focus in communities where they lack health services and provide more for them. They have resources that they are relying on in order to reach their goals. They have joined with National Crusade against Hunger and other programs that will be working with the government to provide social services for low-income communities. Furthermore, this SDG is being addressed in the country and it is considered a priority. I believe that by addressing this goal they want to make a change in their country by helping those who truly need it. Health should be offered to everyone regardless of their income. Mexico, like other UN countries, is taking into consideration their nation's health and that is a great first step in providing health resources for them.

Blog Post 1 - Portugal

Hello everyone! My name is Litza Contreras and the Sustainable Development Goal I have decided to cover is the third goal: Good health and well-being. This goal focuses on bettering the health of individuals as well as learning and studying different diseases and educating others about them. There has been major improvement in bettering individual’s health, but there is always more to be done to continue to provide better health for everyone. The country that I chose to focus on is Portugal. Portugal is part of the United Nations and is located in  southern Europe.

Portugal is dedicated to implementing all of the 17 sustainable development goals. They have an agenda that they would like to achieve by 2030, "Sustainable development sets out clear, economic and social goals, including concrete targets to combat climate change." (National report on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development PORTUGAL, pg. 12) They have come up with a  solution to lower maternal and infant death, they have a program called National Low-Risk Surveillance Programme which will work with individuals and offer care for them. They will also continue to have a program that vaccinates people as well as children against diseases. When this program first started, they started with six different types of vaccines; they are now up to 13 different vaccines and they plan to have more vaccines in the future. The National School Health Programme promotes health in schools and educates children and the youth about the importance of having a healthy lifestyle among other things. Other goals they will like to achieve is "increase life expectancy by 30%, reduce the number of underage smokers to prevent environmental smoke, and finally reducing overweight in children." (The Health of the Portuguese, slide 32) This SDG goal will be monitored with the help of National Statistical Systems who will be the one monitoring the progress.

It is estimated that the government will spend around 3% of their overall budget. Climate change plays a big role in the development of this SDG because “climatic change will increase the possibility of natural occurrence of imported diseases." ((National report on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development PORTUGAL, pg.25 ) This could be an issue for the country because if the rate of disease rises faster than the rate of vaccination there could be a problem preventing certain diseases from spreading. The resources they have to reach this goal is the Plan for Immigrant Integration. With this plan they will increase the monitoring of health in locations where the population is most vulnerable. This issue is currently being addressed in the country, but it is not considered a priority like other SDGs.
