In today’s blog we will be looking at Mexico’s agenda and how they are addressing Sustainable Development Goal, good health and well-being. Like many other countries within the United Nations they have an agenda that would like to implement by 2030. They have 169 targets they would like to address that involve all of the sustainable development goals. At the end of 2015 they started implementing techniques from the agenda. The president has already gotten in contact with many local governments to talk about different ways to implement SDG’s in their programs. Things that need to be done going forward is prioritizing, coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating different methods to make sure that the SDG’s are being fulfilled. (Implementing the 2030 Agenda in Mexico. 2018) Some of the ways they have implemented methods to achieve the third goal is by improving neonatal care and facilitating access. With this they plan to reduce mortality rates in newborns. They would like to provide mother and babies with “positive airway pressure therapy, surfactants for respiratory distress syndrome, oxygen therapy, breastfeeding, and skin-to-skin care.” ( González-Pier, E,. Barraza-Lloréns, M., Beyeler, N., Jamison, D., Knaul, F., Lozano, R., Sepúlveda, J. 2016, August 30 )
To look after the rest of the population, they want to implement new policies as well as build on existing ones. For example, they want to raise taxes on certain items, such as tobacco, sweet beverages, and high calorie processed food. By rising taxes on these items, they want to push their community to make better life choices. In order to monitor this SDG and make sure that it is working, they have come up with a system called Performance Evaluation System (PES). Through this program, they want to make sure that the indicators that they want to reach are achieved. It has not been specified how much Mexico intends to spend, but it is estimated that they will need the government funding of 5%. Another obstacle they might run into is climate change. In order for the community to have good health they need to start looking after the environment they live in. Different areas can affect the way they live their life and climate change can easily influence that. This is an issue for the country because they need to focus in communities where they lack health services and provide more for them. They have resources that they are relying on in order to reach their goals. They have joined with National Crusade against Hunger and other programs that will be working with the government to provide social services for low-income communities. Furthermore, this SDG is being addressed in the country and it is considered a priority. I believe that by addressing this goal they want to make a change in their country by helping those who truly need it. Health should be offered to everyone regardless of their income. Mexico, like other UN countries, is taking into consideration their nation's health and that is a great first step in providing health resources for them.

Hi Litza,
ReplyDeleteThat's great that Mexico has started to work on implementing techniques from their agenda. Also, how they are contacting resources to help with their implementation process. I have never heard of positive pressure airway therapy but it seems like a god way to decrease infant mortality rates. I think that its great that are trying to raise taxes on junk food. I think its a good strategy, I just hope it works. Climate change does play a huge role in the health and well being of the people. It can affect what they do in their day to day lives. And providing those resources for the areas that need it most is important not just for those specific people but for the whole county. Health and good well-being should be an opportunity that is accessible to everyone, and i'm glad Mexico is taking those steps to make that happen.
Hi Litza,
ReplyDeleteIt is good the Mexico is starting to implement changes to help their citizens live a healthier life. By Mexico raising taxes hopefully that would encourage citizens to make better choices. Sometimes though, If someone really wants something they will most likely make means to get it. Just like if someone is a heavy cigarette smoker, they will find a way to buy their cigarettes no matter what the price, but, may take away from another area which may be hurting them or family members. For example, if a child should have regular check ups at the dentist, they may skip that which could affect the child's health in the future. Helping people in low income communities can greatly affect their health. Just giving them access to healthy nutrient foods will help their health dramatically and also teach younger people good eating habits which could help prevent some health conditions later on in their life.
Hi Litza,
ReplyDeleteI too chose to cover Mexico for Blog 2. It's interesting to see how the country is attempting to meet a goal different than the one I chose. Climate change is having a severe impact on Mexico. I found in my research that current administration isn't making much of an effort to combat the changes. This could be detrimental for the country. I hope the President sees this and makes the necessary changes.
Hi Litza
ReplyDeleteI am very glad to hear that Mexico is taking their health status unto a different level ,in terms of quality and medical provisions ,facilities and medical personnel.
Neo-natal and mother to child care is very crucial, for that is where life begins and one gotta develop a good medical care foundation at that stage of life.
Raising taxes on tobacco and sweets will make a tremendous change to lifestyle choices of many as well.
