Blog Post 3 - Belize

January 13 Belize MAIN

The country we will be focusing on is Belize. Belize is located on the Western edge of the Caribbean Sea. Like many other countries, Belize is a beautiful country with many natural wonders; and like most countries they are working hard to “end all forms of poverty, fight inequalities, and tackle climate change, while ensuring that no one is left behind.” (Belize-Sustainable development,2017.) They have come up with strategies to improve Goal #3 which is good health and well-being. They have created an outline of things they would like to improve by 2030. Among those things are, reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live birth rates; end preventable death of newborns and children under 5 years of age, end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and other communicable diseases; promote mental health and well-being, strengthen the prevention and treatment of substance abuse, and provide health coverage for most. They have a lot of targets that they would like to achieve by 2030 and in order to do this they will have to monitor the SDG. They are working closely with the Ministry of Health. Through the Ministry of Health, they have suppliers who will supply them with vaccines and anything that they may need. This will help vaccinate and treat those who truly need it. By having the resources, they need they will be able to improve the health and reach their target.  They have also developed a Drug Inspectorate Unit to monitor pharmaceutical and manufacturing activities in Belize. (Belize-Sustainable development,2017. ) This is important, because they will be able to keep track of what is being used and who is using it. The Government of Belize has increased the amount of funds that is needed in order to expand their health. In order to make this possible the Ministry of Health, has increased the budget to 6% of gross domestic product. This will help in providing the funds they need in order to train staff, have workshops, conferences, and seminars. This will help them reach out and inform others about their health. Although they have come up with approaches to better their health, they also need to focus on climate change and how this may affect their approaches. Between 1998 and 2017 it estimated that more than one million people died, and about four billion were injured due to climate change. (UNDP in Belize.)

They have come up with a resolution to help with climate change, they want to raise funds in order to help those countries with lower resources and assist them in adapting to climate change as well as helping them invest in low-carbon development. This could be an issue for the country, because if climate change is not addressed not only will SDG #3 affected, but other SDG’s will also be affected. Belize is working closely with the Department of the Environment who are trying to control the pollution in that country.Countries must rely on resources to accomplish reaching the goals they have set. Some of the resources that Belize is counting on is the ministry of health, the ministry of education, and the national drug abuse control council. They are all working together to educate those who have little not no knowledge about their health, they are specifically focused on teaching children and young adults about their health. This sustainable development goal is currently being addressed by the country; they are trying to find solutions to the challenges they are facing in order for there to be an improvement. This goal is currently a priority along with SGD’s 1,5, and 14.

  1. Hello Litza,
Reading how much Belize it wanting to change and improve the well-being of its population is very interesting. I like how they are wanting to decrease major problems throughout the world such as ending preventable deaths of children under five years of age, the AIDS epidemic, and communicable diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis. The organization you talk about named Ministry of Health is bound and determined to help along side of Belize to decrease all of these problems they are having. Its interesting they have even taken action to resolve the problem of climate changes affecting the problems they are having. It amazes me how many organizations and programs are working together with Belize to work towards ending the problems they are having while educating about them also.
