Blog Post 1 - Portugal

Hello everyone! My name is Litza Contreras and the Sustainable Development Goal I have decided to cover is the third goal: Good health and well-being. This goal focuses on bettering the health of individuals as well as learning and studying different diseases and educating others about them. There has been major improvement in bettering individual’s health, but there is always more to be done to continue to provide better health for everyone. The country that I chose to focus on is Portugal. Portugal is part of the United Nations and is located in  southern Europe.

Portugal is dedicated to implementing all of the 17 sustainable development goals. They have an agenda that they would like to achieve by 2030, "Sustainable development sets out clear, economic and social goals, including concrete targets to combat climate change." (National report on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development PORTUGAL, pg. 12) They have come up with a  solution to lower maternal and infant death, they have a program called National Low-Risk Surveillance Programme which will work with individuals and offer care for them. They will also continue to have a program that vaccinates people as well as children against diseases. When this program first started, they started with six different types of vaccines; they are now up to 13 different vaccines and they plan to have more vaccines in the future. The National School Health Programme promotes health in schools and educates children and the youth about the importance of having a healthy lifestyle among other things. Other goals they will like to achieve is "increase life expectancy by 30%, reduce the number of underage smokers to prevent environmental smoke, and finally reducing overweight in children." (The Health of the Portuguese, slide 32) This SDG goal will be monitored with the help of National Statistical Systems who will be the one monitoring the progress.

It is estimated that the government will spend around 3% of their overall budget. Climate change plays a big role in the development of this SDG because “climatic change will increase the possibility of natural occurrence of imported diseases." ((National report on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development PORTUGAL, pg.25 ) This could be an issue for the country because if the rate of disease rises faster than the rate of vaccination there could be a problem preventing certain diseases from spreading. The resources they have to reach this goal is the Plan for Immigrant Integration. With this plan they will increase the monitoring of health in locations where the population is most vulnerable. This issue is currently being addressed in the country, but it is not considered a priority like other SDGs.

  1. Hi Litza, I also chose SDG 3. I think that the overall health of the people is one of the most important goals needing to be achieved. Its really great that Portugal is dedicated to implementing all 17 SDG goals. The county that I chose was Iceland and they are also focused on ending maternal and infant death, as well as climate change. The fact that when this health program first started, they only had 6 different types of vaccines and now they are up to 13 is a huge improvement. Its great that they have this program to prevent people and children from different types of diseases. I'm glad that the county of Portugal cares so much about the health of its people and is doing so much to make sure every one has quality health care services.

  2. Hi Litza! I really enjoyed reading your post and learned a lot from it. I too am focusing on the third Sustainable Developmental Goal. Good health and well-being is so important and is something every country needs to focus on improving. I am happy to see that Portugal is working towards doing this. They seem to not only be improving their populations health and well-being but are also striving to improve the other areas as well. I am also pleased to read that they have come up with the National Low-Risk Surveillance Program to help care for individuals, vaccinate them and hopefully lower maternal and infant death. This seems to be a great program and I wish more programs were being put into place throughout the world. I am glad you went on to mention the relationship between climate change and disease. This isn’t something I thought much about but now recognize its importance. In the future I hope they increase the budget going toward climate change, so we have a better chance of preventing certain disease from spreading. Thank you for sharing your post!

  3. Hi Litza, great job on your first blog post. I enjoyed reading about good health and well-being. Good health is important to have if we are focusing on our world, we must also take care of ourselves. Portugal is part of the United Nations and the goals that they have set are to be accomplished in 2030, only ten years away. The economic goals that are set are to be completed by 2030. I learned from reading your post the solution of their organization called the National Low-Risk Surveillance. It is important that they are willing to work with individuals and offer care for them. It is important that each and every person is being taken care of. I also learned that the SDG goal will be monitored with the National Statistical System. It is good that the government is spending budget on the goals to help it be fully completed by the goal of 2030. I did not know that climate change would become such a problem in well-being for the people. It sounds as though the government is working hard on their part and have very important plans to achieve their goals. Great first blog!
